Napkin Folding Guide: 7 Restaurant & Wedding Folds (With Sizes)

Seven folds that lift a table from functional to finished — with the exact napkin size and material each one needs to hold its shape.

A folded napkin is the cheapest upgrade to a tablescape. The right fold signals intention without a cent of extra linen. Below are seven that work in real service — fast enough for a busy dining room, elegant enough for a wedding.

Why Material Decides the Fold

Tissue springs open; airlaid holds a crease like cloth. For any standing or decorative fold (rose, fan, pyramid), use airlaid — tissue will not cooperate. For simple placements (rectangle, triangle), 2-ply tissue is fine. Airlaid vs regular, explained →

The Seven Folds

1. The Rectangle (40 cm)

Fold in half, then into thirds. The workhorse placement for casual dining — 10 seconds, no skill.

2. The Triangle (40 cm)

Fold diagonally; place under cutlery or atop the plate. Slightly dressier than the rectangle.

3. The Pocket (40 cm, airlaid for crispness)

Fold into thirds, then fold the bottom third up and tuck a menu card or cutlery inside. A café-and-grill favorite.

4. The Bishop’s Hat (45 cm, airlaid)

Fold into a triangle, roll the long edge, then invert to form the mitre. Classic banquet presentation.

5. The Rose (45 cm, airlaid)

Accordion-pleat a square, gather the center, and flare the petals. The hero fold for weddings and VIP tables.

6. The Fan (40 cm, airlaid)

Accordion-pleat, then stand and fan from the base. Eye-catching on a plate rim.

7. The Pyramid (40 cm, airlaid)

Tri-fold into a triangle, then stand it point-up. Modern, architectural, great for tasting menus.

Service Speed vs Presentation

In a 200-cover dining room, only folds 1–3 are realistic per cover. Reserve 4–7 for events and VIP sections where setup time is budgeted. Pre-fold airlaid in batches — it holds shape for hours.
